Mid-Point 50 Mile Training

* Draft Started September 15, 2021 *

Guess what?! I am training for the Tunnel Hill 50 mile race in November. I am about halfway through my training, although I am really just now getting in to big (20+) mile runs.

How Do I Feel?

I feel unprepared, even though I have a few months to go.

I feel tired.

I feel a niggle in my left hip.

I feel… lazy? But I’m still running?

I feel so excited.

I feel nervous.

What Am I Doing?

Part of my conflicted feelings have to do with what a hard time I’m having committing to a training plan and schedule. I am used to running 2 days during the week plus 1 or 2 weekend days as well. And that just doesn’t seem to be cutting it this time around.

Working through COVID for the past 18 months is taking more of a toll on me and my body than I originally expected. I dove into this race and training because I needed something big to look forward to.

* End of Original Post Draft *

It’s now March 29, 2022. That race, the Tunnel Hill 50 Miler, it was a DNF. I ran a bit over 40 miles but the thought of going 10 more, in the dark, in the cold, and totally solo – I just didn’t have the heart for it anymore. Not just that night, but… at all? Way more to come on this, I feel like writing it out will help me feel better, or at least get some of my stuff in order.

40+ Friday Five!

It’s Friday, I feel like writing, and since my last Friday Five, I officially turned 40! SO here is the 40 year old Friday Five!

READING – I have been doing a lot of reading recently!  I have an Advanced Readers Copy of The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern that I just want to dive in to and keep getting interrupted from. This weekend will hopefully change that. I also had How to Give Up Plastic by Will McCallum come in for me at the library today. After seeing an advertisement for Sweet Potatoast, I have really been seething over how badly our culture is inclined to wastefully buy something prepackaged and processed that they could easily have gotten on their own without wasting a single plastic bag. It’s a fucking potato, why can’t you just buy a potato? Why does it have to come frozen in a bag?? AHHHHHHHHH.

MOVIE Serenity. See Podcast posting below. LOLOL.

PODCAST – How Did This Get Made – EP. 216: Serenity. This movie, as with the majority of movies on HDTGM is BONKERS. It’s so so bad. And so weird. And completely baffling as to how the cast came to be in this movie. Why is Matthew McConaughey always soaking wet? Why does he say he’s going to take a shower when he jumps in the ocean? What is Jason Strong’s accent supposed to be?  When ever you need a laugh, pair a movie and podcast episode together and enjoy the ride.

RECIPE Thai Turkey with Carrot (and zucchini) Noodles. After a weekend of travelling then getting back into the routine of work, it was great to have easy recipes this week. I made a big batch of chili to have for lunches, we had a tofu curry dish early in the week, then I put together this thai turkey. It is so so easy, and also adaptable to other veggies. I used zucchini and carrot noodles and I think I would probably cut out the broth entirely because the veggies give off a lot of liquid. Also, double up on the sriracha. It’s worth it!

FITNESS Crushing It Columbus. I still hate mornings, but motivated people and sweaty high fives is starting to change my mind.

Post Vacation Friday Five!

Just back from an incredible break in Sunny Florida! I hadn’t been since I was so young I don’t remember it, so this year we decided to join my folks in Key West. Let’s just say that starting the morning at the pool where it’s 80 degrees and ending it with a Wintry Mix storm warning was a shock to the system after all that!

READING – I started and finished the perfect vacation book while I was away. The Lost Man was a fast paced, smart and intriguing book that was just right for poolside reading. It is the story of a family who is processing the mysterious death of the middle brother, married with two children who dies at the peak of summer in Australia. The outback is just as much a character in the book as any of the family, and I was constantly reminded just how vast that country is.

WATCHING – I finally got around to starting Schitt$ Creek on Netflix. I downloaded two episodes for a plane ride and wished I had more. It moves fast, it’s hilarious and it’s got good heart at it’s core.

PODCAST – This week my mind has been on My Favorite Murder! I went to two different local meet ups with people who are fans of the show (Columberinos!), we had a book club and a movie meet up this week and both were great. I have been playing ‘catch up’ for about a year with the show, and will get to go to a live recording in March. So looking forward to it! MFM has sparked a renewed interest in true crime for me.

RECIPE – Every time someone asks for a recommendation for what to make in an Instant Pot (pressure cooker), this is the first recipe I send to them. It’s the Serious Eats Green Chili Chicken recipe. It’s easy, tasty and crave-able. The person who recommended it to me also suggested serving it over fries, which is how we came to decide last night that this is Mexican Poutine. (We used queso fresco on top.)

FITNESS – Remember that motivational rut? I’m still in it. I am starting to get really worried because my goal race is 10 weeks away and my long runs are seriously lacking. I don’t want to get injured but I also don’t want to pull back on my goal. I am making running a priority this week. I need to find my joy again. It was a treat to run in Key West, but the heat was problematic and I only got one run in. I have been feeling icky, I am really run down, and I made an appointment with my GP next week to make sure that everything is ok. Hopefully I can work my way back to myself!

February Friday Five!

Well, Friday Five didn’t work out the way I planned because I skipped four Fridays in a row. This is why I can’t be a professional blogger! Here is what has stuck out to me over the past week:

READING – All I have been thinking about this week is an article that came out from a local paper regarding the horrific treatment of women at a local brewery. Columbus has been experiencing a booming craft beer scene, especially over the past five or six years. Many would say we are saturated with craft breweries, so it’s time to start selective drinking. And NOTHING will make me blacklist a brewer faster than this article from the Columbus Alive. It’s a graphic and difficult read, but it is making me realize how important it is to vote with your spending money. I don’t ever want to give that dude a penny, and supporting female owned breweries and bars (of which there are some great ones in town!) is my new way to do that.

MOVIE Thunder Road. What a surprise this movie was. I was working my way through Maddwolf Best Films of 2018 and this one was never on my radar until their article came out. The first 10 minutes of the movie are so full of grief, but handled so gently. It’s a sweet and volatile film that I don’t think many will see, but I’m so glad I did.

PODCAST – I am so on board with The Teacher’s Pet right now! It is a great piece of investigative journalism surrounding the disappearance of a young woman in Australia. Her husband was prone to violence and also having an affair with the high school aged babysitter who he lets move in to their house. But when Lyn disappears, police conclude that she left to start a new live and the case is closed. Years later, friends and family still believe that her husband killed her. I am only listening in small doses so I have not finished the full series, but it is such great reporting and I highly recommend it!

RECIPE – I almost can’t believe this one needs a recipe, but it’s so simple that I have to share the dish we’ve been making about every other week at home: Fettuccine with winter greens and a poached egg. As someone who doesn’t love raw greens, this one is always a winner for me. It’s savory with a touch of sweet from the red onion, and it all comes together so quickly. It’s a great use of the tasty veg and eggs we get from Yellowbird all winter.

FITNESS – Winter has been really rough on me in terms of motivation. I want to sleep in, go to bed early and take all the naps. That means when my 4:45 alarm goes off for the gym, more often than not I have been hitting snooze and going back to sleep. That, on top of icy and snowy weather, plus a flat tire after a run has made things really challenging. I am planning on a pretty significant spring race goal, but I can’t seem to stay on track when it comes to getting out there to do the work. Yesterday, I did manage a 14 mile solo run, but aside from listening to great podcasts and an interesting audiobook, I had a REALLY hard time of it. I am hoping to keep chipping away at my goals, to get more sleep, and try to focus on each week instead of getting overwhelmed by the big picture.

New Year, New Thoughts: Friday Five!

Welcome back to my sleepy corner of blog land. As a part of cutting down on screentime, I have obviously stopped writing. But I miss writing up my recaps and sharing tidbits of my week. Whether or not anyone reads them is a whole other story, but I find it to be an enjoyable practice!

I am taking inspiration and going to the Friday Five format. This was sparked by an email we get from our local farm box company, Yellowbird Food Shed. I am a HUGE advocate of Yellowbird, we get fresh produce and local products delivered to our home, and we know that our food choices are making an impact on the local food chain. If you’re local to central Ohio and want an referral, please let me know! For Benji’s weekly roundup, he shares a book, a movie, podcast, a recipe, and a song. I love this! I am going to tweak to my needs just a little and instead of a song, I want to share something fitness related instead. Here goes, the first Friday Five of 2019.

BOOKNine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. I just finished this book on audio. I started with The Husband’s Secret which was great, and the absolutely fell in love with Big Little Lies. (The show was a perfect adaptation!)  I started this one on a roadtrip to a race. At first, it was hard to follow the characters (probably because I was driving?!) but as I got in to it, I really enjoyed it. The story could have been tightened up a little bit, and I wouldn’t describe the story as psychological fiction, but I did find myself wondering what I would do in the situation of the characters. Caroline Lee, who narrated the other two audiobooks I listened to from this author, does a great job infusing humanity and humor in to each of the characters.

MOVIE – Sorry to Bother YouWhat. A. Trip. This movie was fascinating. I enjoyed it, but MAN did it go off the rails at the end. It has some interesting things to say about consumerism, race and power in our country. The first 2/3rds explores the life of a black telemarketer who climbs the ladder of his telemarketing company by using his “white person voice.” He is able to endear himself to all his clients and work his way up (literally) to become a power caller. All this is going on while his co-workers and his girlfriend are on strike against the company, and Cassius is going to coke-fueled parties hosted by the CEO. There are elements of Fight Club here, but what Cassius discovers at these parties just sends the movie around the twist. I recommend it, but I know it’s not for everyone!

PODCAST – The Wilderness from Crooked Media. I am going to be the first to admit it, I am not a political junkie. I know that media is biased, and I do find myself leaning towards liberal media for my news. After the 2016 election, I actually just shut down with consuming political news all together. I stuck my head in the sand. But guess what? That is not how we make change. The Wilderness was created by Jon Favreau (not of Swingers or Chef fame, but of President Obama‘s speechwriter fame), and “tells the story of a party [the Democratic party] finding its way out of the political wilderness through conversations with strategists, historians, policy experts, organizers, and voters. In fifteen chapters, the series explores issues like inequality, race, immigration, sexism, foreign policy, media strategy, and how Democrats can build a winning majority that lasts.” I am using this as a re-entry to and beginning of my own political education. I had to take a break from it awhile ago because, frankly there are heavy feelings involved here.

RECIPE – I am doing my best to eat vegetarian at the start of 2019, so I am taking a 31 Day Vegetarian Challenge with Budget Bytes. But let’s talk about the first day of January. I woke up, met friends at a diner for a run, then scooted up to the counter for pancakes and bacon. Yep, I totally forgot about my veg challenge ON DAY ONE! So, I still plan to eat veg for the rest of the month, and the first dish was Spicy Peanut Stew with Ginger and Tomatoes. The NYT Recipe is the one I used because BF doesn’t eat sweet potatoes, but I have also made the Budget Bytes version in the past and I LOVE it! It’s spicy sweet, it’s loaded with veggies, it is really filling. Try it out!

FITNESS – Humblebrag time! On Saturday December 29, I finished the Huff 50k at Chain O’ Lakes State Park in Albion, Indiana. This race was one that I attempted two years ago as my first Ultra run. The weather was horrible (deep snow and ice/rain), and the course was shut down before I could finish. So in October of this year, a little last minute, I decided to try it again since I had the base of the Chicago Marathon, and I really wanted to finish. The training was slow, and I regretted the decision every morning when it was cold and dark and I had spent the evening drinking wine and eating Christmas cookies. The race was difficult for me, but I had great company and they were able to help get me through the day. I am super proud of this day!

Let’s Talk About Pace Stigma

It’s three weeks away from race day, and I guess what? Instead of getting really excited about toeing the line and taking a tour of Chicago (my OG running home), I have gotten in to my head about pace. I have this demon on my shoulder who says “you are TOO SLOW to run a marathon” and “everyone will be waiting for you to finish. It will take too long.”

Why? WHY am I having these feelings, after six marathons? After two 50ks? After miles and miles and miles of running where I say “I don’t care about pace, I just want to have fun!”?!

Because no matter what, “what’s your pace?” is always out there. Fellow runners ask about time goals, it’s in their nature. Isn’t everyone trying to PR all the time? Don’t you want to get faster? Isn’t that the whole idea? But what do I do if that doesn’t happen? No one really likes to fail their goal, so what is the point? At group runs, I smile, introduce myself, and promptly end up as the last runner in the pack. “I’m doing my own thing, it’s fine! Have a great run!” I have been working on my positive spin for years! “PARTY IN THE BACK!” “MY PACE IS FORWARD!” “MY GOAL IS TO FINISH WITH A SMILE!”

But this week, as I am reflecting back on races past, I came across this graphic from the 2017 Columbus Marathon results. I was disappointed with my time, I’m not going to lie. I finished in 5:46:35, almost 20 minutes slower than my marathon PR on this same course two years earlier. But to add to my disappointment in myself is this little cartoon graphic at the bottom.

Do you see it? Do you see this silhouette? Do you see those curves? That wider body? Do you see those slim folks up front? Do you know what this says?  It says that pace is equivalent to size. Do you know what I say? BULLSHIT. Runners come in all sizes and by no means does size predict shape. Are some back-of-the-pack runners comparatively larger? Sure. Are all larger runners in the back of the pack? Absolutely not.

I spent the first ten miles of my most recent 20 mile training run listening to music, trying to slow down, focusing on nutrition, realizing how hot it was, and generally just cruising along. And then, I got in to a dark space in my head. I turned around and realized how far I had to get back to where I started. I realized that my pace was much slower than I wanted. That if *this* was my marathon pace, I might not even finish in 6 hours. And down and down and down in to the saddest head space I plummeted. But I the problem is, I didn’t even leave it on the course. I took it home with me. I wallowed in it. I complained about being old, about being slow, and that unspoken but true thought, about being FAT. Because that back-of-the-pack pace image is stuck in my head now.

After all that wallowing, I re-hydrated. I reflected. And I got a good night’s sleep. And when I woke up on Sunday morning, I remembered that this is MY RACE. Who cares if I’m slow? Who even remembers my finish time last year? Who wants running to be a punishment for diet, instead of a celebration of a strong body? NO ONE DOES. I am going to run for myself, and dammit, I am going do enjoy it. As a result of all this moping (obsessing?) about speed and pace, I bought myself this gift via 300 Pounds and Running. PARTY IN THE BACK? YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY EFFING RIGHT.
